Experienced community health leader will guide the nonprofit’s next chapter of service to agricultural workers and their families

Des Moines, Iowa – The Proteus, Inc. Board of Directors has named Sarah Zeidler as the organization’s new CEO. Zeidler will officially join Proteus in mid-October, just before the organization’s biggest annual fundraiser, “I’m Thankful for Farmworkers Dinner,” which takes place in Des Moines on November 5.
“The Board of Directors is excited to welcome Sarah to this role,” said Sarah Nash, Board President. “Proteus remains focused on expanding access to critical services for farmworkers and their families across the region. Sarah brings broad experience in community health, workforce development, financial stewardship, and strategic growth. Her vision and leadership will help guide Proteus into its next chapter of service.”
Zeidler most recently served as Executive Director of Oncology Services at UnityPoint Health’s John Stoddard Cancer Center. Her community leadership includes service on the boards of the Iowa Cancer Consortium, YMCA Supportive Housing Campus, and American Heart Association. She is also a 2026 Business Record Forty Under 40 honoree and a graduate of Lead DSM’s Community Leadership Program.
Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Carla Beste served as interim CEO after former CEO Dr. Daniel Zinnel’s departure in July. Beste has worked at Proteus for more than three decades, serving in various leadership roles throughout her tenure. She’ll continue her role as CFO while helping ensure a smooth transition for Zeidler.
“Proteus has earned a reputation for meeting people where they are and helping them build brighter futures,” Zeidler stated. “I am excited to join an organization with such a strong foundation and dedicated team. As we look ahead, I am committed to strengthening relationships, advancing our mission, and ensuring Proteus continues to be a trusted resource for the communities we serve.”
Founded in 1979, Proteus will celebrate 50 years of service in 2029. Under new leadership, the organization will continue to build on its legacy of supporting agricultural workers and their families through job training, educational assistance, and access to healthcare.
