From Farmworker to Business Owner: Darlene’s Story of Perseverance

Darlene embodies the strength and determination of countless migrant farmworkers. A proud Latina woman, mother, grandmother, and abuse survivor, she came to Indiana seeking a better life for her family. But the path wasn’t always easy.

Darlene’s journey took a turn for the better in 2013 when she connected with Jesusa Rivera, a Senior Career Coach at Proteus, Inc. Through Proteus’ National Farmworker Jobs Program, Darlene discovered the resources she needed to not only survive, but thrive.

“I am a product of Proteus programs,” Darlene says. “Jesusa unlocked the programs that helped me and my family overcome adversity with resilience, grace, and success.”

Eleven years later, the results speak for themselves. Darlene has not only achieved financial stability but has also opened her own business. Her story extends beyond herself, with her children also benefiting from Proteus’ programs. Listen to Darlene as she reads the letter she wrote to Proteus after being honored as the 2020 Indiana Farmworker of the Year:

Darlene’s success doesn’t end there. Grateful for the support she received, she embodies the spirit of Proteus by “paying it forward” and uplifting others in the farmworker community.

Darlene’s story is a testament to the transformative power of Proteus Inc. It’s a story of resilience, determination, and the power of community.
