August 3–9 is National Health Center Week, a chance to shine a light on the life-changing work of community health centers across the country (including here at Proteus)!
As a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), Proteus is proud to be part of a network of over 1,400 organizations serving more than 30 million people nationwide. We specialize in bringing high-quality, affordable, and culturally competent care directly to farmworkers and their families, meeting them where they are — often in rural or remote communities with limited access to traditional healthcare.

But what does it mean to be an FQHC?
FQHCs are community-based health care providers that receive federal funding to deliver comprehensive primary care in underserved areas. To qualify, clinics must meet stringent standards around service delivery, governance, and equity — including offering a sliding fee scale and ensuring patients are not denied care based on ability to pay.
At Proteus, that translates into:
- Mobile medical units that bring care to fields, orchards, and rural worksites
- Multilingual staff trained to support diverse communities with dignity and respect
- Health education, chronic disease screenings, and prescription assistance
- Partnerships with local providers and pharmacies to connect patients with wraparound care

In addition to healthcare, FQHCs like Proteus offer support services that strengthen entire communities — including case management, outreach, and job training — with a special focus on those who are uninsured, underinsured, or facing systemic barriers to care.
This National Health Center Week, we’re proud to celebrate the work we do, and the incredible farmworkers and families we’re honored to serve!
