Proteus Celebrates Indiana Farmworkers at Recognition Breakfast

The 6th annual Indiana Farmworker Recognition Breakfast, held on March 29th in South Bend, was a resounding success. Proteus raised over $17,000 to support our ongoing work on behalf of Indiana’s farmworkers!

The breakfast, held at and sponsored by Four Winds Casino South Bend, featured a keynote address by Paloma Garcia-Lopez, Associate Director of the Institute for Latino Studies at Notre Dame. Ms. Garcia-Lopez provided insightful commentary on the lives and needs of farmworkers.

A highlight of the event was the presentation of awards:

  • Proteus, Inc. Lifetime Empowerment Award: This year’s honoree is former Indiana House Representative Rebecca Kubacki. Ms. Kubacki was recognized for her unwavering dedication to improving the lives of farmworkers in Indiana.
  • Proteus, Inc. Partner of the Year Award: This year’s honoree is Four Winds Casinos. From providing crucial community connections to supporting the Indiana Farmworker Recognition Breakfast each year as a Presenting Sponsor, we couldn’t be more grateful for their commitment to our mission.
  • Dolores Huerta Award: This award recognizes a female farmworker who exemplifies resilience and farmworker advocacy. This year’s recipient is Carmen Barrera of Kercher Sunrise Orchards in Goshen.
  • Proteus National Farmworker Jobs Program: Students in the National Farmworker Jobs Program (NFJP) were presented with laptops to support their educational pursuits, along with certificates of excellence for their outstanding work and dedication.
