Who is Proteus?
Proteus is an Iowa based private not-for-profit corporation providing a variety of services for low income people, primarily farmworkers.
Proteus strives to contribute towards a just society that celebrates diversity in all its forms and in which individuals can be engaged in work that provides them a sense of well-being, affords them opportunities for personal growth, and allows them to be full participants in the development of their communities; and a society in which all individuals can share in the American dream of home, family, good health, prosperity and security.
Proteus Works with Iowa's Farmworkers...
These are the farmworkers that care for livestock and plant, cultivate and harvest crops that feed the nation and contribute substantially to the economic health of Iowa. Yet, for performing such important work, farmworkers are rewarded with seasonal jobs, low pay, dangerous working conditions, squalid temporary housing, chronic unemployment, poor health, low educational levels and disrupted family lives.
Proteus also works with other low income populations...
Proteus also works with Iowa's refugee, immigrant populations and other minority populations. These individuals, often victims in their native lands, caught up in civil war, political reprisals and severe poverty, come to America with their own dreams of prosperity and peace. Once here, however, they often are victimized because of their inability to understand or to make themselves understood, their difficulty in transitioning to a new culture, and, in many instances, their undocumented status causes them to endure social inequities and severe financial hardships.
