Housing Education

Through a federal grant program, Proteus provides migrant farmworkers with rental assistance to an estimated 100 families each year. Migrant farmworkers arriving to the state to perform farm work are given a voucher to go toward their first month’s rent in order to create immediate stability.

In addition, Proteus provides housing assistance as needed to migrant farmworkers and their families which will include finding and securing housing and also housing education through the curriculum Rent Smart.

Home Ownership Education

Rent Smart/Home Ownership Education is a holistic curriculum on money and credit management course sponsored by UMOS. NFJP clients are educated on how to obtain and maintain safe, decent and affordable housing as a renter or home owner.

Course topics and information include:

  • impact of income and expenses
  • spending habits
  • credit history
  • landlord/tenant communication
  • rights and responsibilities

In addition, information regarding fair housing and rights under the Fair Housing law is provided.

With their attendance, each eligible farmworker earns $75.00 to be applied to their next month’s rent. Subject to finding availability.
