Case Manager Lives Proteus Mission

Student finds job with Work Experience program

Susan Billups Rabick is a Regional Director in Nebraska.

In Hastings, Nebraska Case Manager Jody Stutzman lives the Proteus mission every day. She truly acts upon the charge to provide individuals in her community with health, educational and economic opportunities. She does this with enthusiasm and creativity – and boundless energy!

Jody met her recent client, Roymer, after receiving the referral of his mother through the Nebraska Department of Labor. Roymer, his mother and sister were able to qualify for National Farmworker Jobs Program services based on his mother’s work sorting corn. This coming fall, Roymer will be a senior at Grand Island Senior High. He has limited English skills so when the Jody asked him what he wanted to do after high school Roymer told her he just wanted to focus on finishing school. Later, during a meeting with Roymer’s mother, Yolanda, Jody learned that Roymer wanted to find a part-time job. Roymer had never had a job before so he did not know where to begin looking. Jody thought that this would be the perfect opportunity for Work Experience program. A Work Experience is an opportunity for a participant to gain experience at a job site while being paid by Proteus. There is no cost to the employer.

Roymer, Yolanda, and the Jody met with Steve from the Multicultural Coalition of Grand Island. He took some notes and the next day Steve called to say that he may have found a possibility for a Work Experience at the Grand Island Public Library. Roymer met with the library staff and found out that he would be helping with the children’s summer reading program. This includes reading books in English to children, putting library materials away, and setting up for special events.

Roymer’s mother informed Jody that this job has really help him gain confidence and has been a great way to practice his English skills. Roymer even said that he liked the job so much there are days when he wanted to stay and pick up extra hours!

Support Ends Struggles

Proteus client receives needed assistance

Patrick Taggart is a Regional Director in Iowa.

Adam De Regnier knew going to post secondary school would be a challenge. What he didn’t account for was the struggle of balancing to make ends meet while focusing on his grades.

Adam had worked seasonally for a hog farmer near North English, Iowa. He had enrolled at Indian Hills Community College in the diesel tech program as he had always enjoyed working on heavy machinery. Upon hearing a presentation from a Proteus representative, Adam saw an opportunity to relieve himself of his financial burdens with the assistance Proteus could provide.

After getting accepted into the program, Adam quickly saw the benefits of having a case manager’s assistance to ensure his success. Not only was he able to earn a stipend for class hours attended, funds for his gas and the purchase of some tools, he was also given sound advice on school and job search matters.

With assistance from Proteus, Matt has a new career as a diesel tech.

“I got a lot of good advice on how to get my resume together and look for jobs,” Adam stated when asked what he enjoyed about Proteus. “The money was nice too,” he added.

Adam graduated in the spring of 2017 and used the new skills he acquired in searching for a job and ensuring his resume would be professional and get him the attention needed for an interview. He is now working for Agriland FS as an applicator where he can apply both his farmwork experience and diesel tech expertise to ensure the duties assigned to him are carried out successfully.

Having Proteus behind him while enrolled gave Adam the extra security needed to focus on his studies and not worry about missing class so he could work to get his bills paid.
